The Prosecution Division within the South Kingstown Police Department is ultimately responsible for the determination of criminal complaints to be brought before the appropriate court, Department of Attorney General or referral to another agency. The Prosecution Division is responsible for all department matters involving criminal prosecution, including but not limited to court arraignments, felony screenings, grand jury presentations, warrant production, witness notification, and court scheduling.

Coordination

To insure a consistent relationship relative to the needs of the Prosecution Division in the furtherance of the Department Mission and Philosophy, the Prosecution Division coordinates the activities of the office with that of:

• Criminal Defense Attorneys
• Department of Attorney General
• Department of Corrections
• Department of Probation and Parole
• Federal Law Enforcement and Regulatory Agencies
• Office of the Public Defender
• Patrol and Detective Divisions
• Rhode Traffic Tribunal
• Town Solicitor
• Other Agencies

Tasks

The Prosecution Division has a variety of functions assigned as tasks. The Division conducts investigations, assists the Department of Probation and Parole and the Department of Attorney General in monitoring probationers, parolees, and those defendants serving suspended sentences. The Division provides in service training in conjunction with the Training Officer in furtherance of the duties of the Division. The Division also maintains contact with victims of crimes to ensure that the victim's impact statement is given consideration in the disposition of all criminal matters.
