South Kingstown Solar Consortium (SKSC)

In 2015, the Town of South Kingstown joined with the Town of Narragansett and University of Rhode Island to form the South Kingstown Solar Consortium (SKSC) to determine the feasibility of developing solar farms on three (3) remediated Superfund landfills located in the Town of South Kingstown.

An award of contract was authorized to Kearsarge Energy of Boston, MA in December of 2015 to construct “on-site” solar facilities on the Rose Hill Landfill, Plains Road Town Dump and URI Disposal Site. The entire cost of engineering, permitting and construction were borne by Kearsarge, with no funding contribution by the SKSC. In turn, the SKSC receives 25% of all energy produced by the sites, which is credited to SKSC electrical accounts under the State’s virtual net metering (VNM) program.

In addition to the “on-site” project with Kearsarge Energy, the SKSC also awarded a contract in February of 2016 to Energy Development Partners (EDP) of Providence, RI, d/b/a University Solar for an “off-site” solar project located in West Greenwich, RI. Similar to the SKSC’s “on-site” project, no SKSC capital funding was used for the “off-site’ project, whereby SKSC members receive 22.5% off all energy produced at the University Solar project.
